Open to students in grades nine through twelve who meet the eligibility requirements and rules of the Science Horizons Science Fair. Students do not have to participate in the Fair to be eligible for the Symposium.  However, all students applying to present at the symposium must fill out all registration forms for science fair and submit them by the registration deadline.

Description

The Symposium portion of Science Horizons first began in 1976 as "The Environmental Conference for High School Students." It was organized by members of the Advisory Board of Hillside Education Center in Brewster, New York. The conference eventually became known as the Science Symposium soon after it teamed up with Science Horizons in 1985.

This Symposium provides an opportunity for high school students to present results of independent research to theirs peers and area professionals. Papers are selected for presentation based on the content and quality of the research outline. A panel of engineers, scientists and business people from local industries evaluates presentations.  Scholar incentive awards are given based on content and quality of the presentation. In the event of close decisions by the judges, papers will be considered to help determine the winners. It is expected that the paper will be of high quality. It is the responsibility of the students to effectively preset their material.

Symposium participants are divided into three sections. Fifteen minutes are allowed for each presentation followed by a five-minute question and answer period. The best entrant in each group is chosen to present their paper before all the judges at the end of the day.

Awards

  • The Overall Winner of the Science Symposium is awarded a $1,000 scholarship.
  • The Overall second and third prize winners and the first, second and third prize winners in each division receive cash awards.
  • Divisions and awards are subject to change at the discretion of the Board of Directors.
  • The two overall winners are invited to present their papers at the Connecticut Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. (New York students are not eligible.) Only a few students from the state of Connecticut are selected for this honor each year.

Deadline Details

  1. All Science Horizon Fair registration paperwork must be filled by the November 6th deadline date.

  2. 3. All those who definitely want to present their research must submit an abstract NO LATER than the January 6th deadline date.  The form for submitting the abstract and student profile is available as a PDF.

  4. Selection of participants will be based on contents of the abstract. No Abstract will be accepted if not received by due date.

  5. Based on the abstract the Symposium Committee will select the papers to be presented, and notify the students selected by MM/DD/YYYY.
