PlaceWestern Connecticut State University, Midtown Campus, Danbury, Connecticut EligibilityOpen to students in grades nine through twelve who meet the eligibility requirements and rules of the Science Horizons Science Fair. Students do not have to participate in the Fair to be eligible for the Symposium. However, all students applying to present at the symposium must fill out all registration forms for science fair and submit them by the registration deadline. DescriptionThe Symposium portion of Science Horizons first began in 1976 as "The Environmental Conference for High School Students." It was organized by members of the Advisory Board of Hillside Education Center in Brewster, New York. The conference eventually became known as the Science Symposium soon after it teamed up with Science Horizons in 1985. This Symposium provides an opportunity for high school students to present results of independent research to theirs peers and area professionals. Papers are selected for presentation based on the content and quality of the research outline. A panel of engineers, scientists and business people from local industries evaluates presentations. Scholar incentive awards are given based on content and quality of the presentation. In the event of close decisions by the judges, papers will be considered to help determine the winners. It is expected that the paper will be of high quality. It is the responsibility of the students to effectively preset their material. Symposium participants are divided into three sections. Fifteen minutes are allowed for each presentation followed by a five-minute question and answer period. The best entrant in each group is chosen to present their paper before all the judges at the end of the day.Awards
